The reopening of the Port Credit Memorial Park - the City's news release is below.  As my election web-site was not up yet, not able to hand out flyers as planned.  With the Mayor and Councillor Carmen Corbasson in attendance it looked like a tense time as the bail conductions that resulted from their staff entrapping me when the City "implement (ed) their plan of action," against me.

However, the police said it could be done, none-the-less they were in the small crowd acting like they had not been seen.
Spot the under-cover cops  - click here for answer -

In the usual fashion big dollars were spent and things not go as planned.

For $5,000,000 it appears you can't buy a sound system that works and it did not.

Those that set up the chairs left lots of skid marks on the new concrete.

The pit falls of new parks - here is a hole beside a drain, saw a few people step into and almost fall down & there were lots of seniors there that day.
Pointed it out to senior City staff who covered it with a garbage can and said they had not done their finial inspection yet.  Good I was on the scene, strange the Peel police who were there, didn't take the same interest in the public's safety as I did.

Candidate for Mayor Roy Willis was out for the event.

The grand moment, the cutting of the ribbon to officially open the park.  Looks like Ward 1 Councillor Carmen Corbasson needs to work on getting that right. Interesting when these two tried to work together and unveil the park plaque, it was knocked over and almost hit the stage floor.

Another interesting "point" was that the roof points of the pavilion are covered with sharp spikes!  Can't really see them in the picture.  Likely to keep the birds off but made it look very uninviting all round.

This is the City's new release - read it and believe, believe.

City of Mississauga Celebrates Completion of the Port Credit Memorial Park Redevelopment Project.

Today an official ceremony marked the completion of the Port Credit Memorial Park Redevelopment Project. Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion and Ward 1 Councillor Carmen Corbasson, were joined by Dr. Gary Goodyear, on behalf of Tony Clement, Federal Minister of Health and Federal Minister Responsible for Canada-Ontario Infrastructure Program; The Honourable Jim Bradley, Ontario Minister of Tourism and Ontario Minister Responsible for Seniors; Vicki Barron of the Waterfront Regeneration Trust and Marian M. Gibson of the Mississauga Heritage Foundation to celebrate the completion of this important Canada-Ontario Infrastructure Program (COIP) project.

To develop a concept plan for the Port Credit Memorial Redevelopment Project, the City of Mississauga reviewed leisure opportunities for families, children, youth, adults, seniors and people of all abilities to incorporate them into the park design. Some of the new park features include: an extensive, accessible pathway system; large open area for free unstructured play and large events; an urban plaza and gathering space with a village pavilion; skateboard facility; basketball keys; accessible playground with cooling mister; heritage displays and historical interpretive signage; and an expanded parking area.

"The City of Mississauga would like to thank our federal and provincial partners for supporting this exciting project," said Mayor Hazel McCallion. "We are a pro-active city that responds to and meets the challenges of growth and the changing needs of the residents who live, work and play in Mississauga. Port Credit Memorial Park with its new features will now be the home of many of our annual festivals and concerts. It will be used and enjoyed by all residents of Mississauga."

The Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario each committed up to $506,000 to the project through COIP. The City of Mississauga provided $4.5 million in funding to the park redevelopment.

"The upgrades that have taken place at Port Credit Memorial Park blend and add beauty to the surrounding area and help to foster a greater sense of community and pride for local residents," said Dr. Goodyear. "Canada's new government is pleased to have supported this community project, which makes such a positive contribution to the quality of life in the City of Mississauga."

"The McGuinty government recognizes that healthy, active people build strong, vibrant communities," said Minisiter Bradley. "I am pleased that Ontario has invested half a million dollars to help Mississauga create a park that meets the leisure and recreational needs of its residents."

The Port Credit Memorial Park Redevelopment Project is part of the Waterfront Regeneration Trust's Lake Ontario Waterfront Investment Program with COIP. The Investment Program involves 27 partners and 52 regeneration and trail projects representing $32 million of public/private investment on the waterfront. The Canada –Ontario Infrastructure Program's contribution of up to $9.18 million toward the projects has leveraged a $23 million investment by local partners in the enhancement of the Lake Ontario Waterfront Trail, which stretches along the Canadian shores of Lake Ontario from Niagara to Quebec.

The Investment Program will result in 125 kilometres of new trail and trail connections; six major waterfront promenades; two bridges; improvements to over 20 waterfront parks; five new cultural heritage facilities; interpretation of over 20 waterfront habitats; four major brownfield rehabilitation projects; six significant waterfront habitat restoration projects; and three harbour/marina revitalization projects.

Mississauga is Canada's sixth largest city with a population of more than 700,000. With well-established infrastructure and state-of-the-art facilities, the City delivers quality municipal programs and services to its citizens. Mississauga is recognized as Canada's safest city.

Would-be politicians scared to seek election
Was the "Missing" News trying to SCARE away candidates in an election where there is the genuine chance of more then one new face on City Council and really up-setting the status-quo and no more business as usual.  One thing is for sure the Mississauga News should never have tried to "call" the election even before the filing deadline has pasted - it can easily be seen as an effort to keep people from running as it would be futile to even try!

McCallion takes another jab at region.
Even the business community wonders about the Mayor's obsession with seperatiing Mississauga from Peel - "
Now McCallion isn't advocating city state status for Mississauga, or dare we say it, a virtual dictatorship, but her ongoing battle to remove her city from the Region of Peel continues unabated.
"
Does she have the energy to continue the struggle?"

Municipal election attracts 140 candidates
This says it all when it comes to politely say the Mayor should be put out to pasture.
"
Mississauga has changed enormously in the past decade, and now sits at a very important crossroads in its development.  As the city transitions from a suburban to an urban community, sound political leadership is needed, which makes this election especially significant."

Oct. 4, 2006, Wed.  7 pm.

Founding meeting for the Lakeview Ratepayers Association -a fiery time was had by all - even the reporters!

The meeting was held at the Cawthra Seniors Centre - 7 pm and well attend about 200 or so showed up, as well as all of the candidates for Mayor.  The Mayor and Ward 1 Councillor,
Carmen Corbasson were invited to speak but not the other candidates, it was claimed that it was not a election meeting, however when the Mayor spoke it sounded very much like a campaign speech.  Speaking of the Mayor, she is well know for letting loose with some real crazy statements that her supporters hope no one will remember BUT NOT this time!  Below are some sound bites that are real choice material indeed.  Statements by Carmen were great too for those listening and thinking.

Hazel McCallion wishes she was in Russia!!

To hear that from the lips of the Mayor of Mississauga was shocking!!
I want to to jump up call out say it isn't so but as I was under a court order not to, speak to Mississauga's politicians because McCallion Council entrapped me and her security guards (that wear all black uniforms), had framed me with false charges - had answered my own question.

She confesses of dreaming, of the absolute power to say NO, not to make decisions yes or no, the power to say NO!
Hazel shows her true colours Nyet, Nyet Soviet!

But it not stop there.
The dear sweet Mayor also said - "Democracy is the best system we know but it sure has it weaknesses."  Ah the Freudian slips of the elderly.

  Is this Councillor
Corbasson praying the Mayor does not lose it - again?

A key element of the night was the proposed gas powered power plant to go where the Lakeview power station was.  Hazel McCallion bragged that she was part of the effort to put up that plant (that polluted the air badly), that she got an award for helping take it down and now she do it all over again.  The Mayor, being the politicians she is was not going to say one way or the other BUT her position did sound like a yes.

"Quit acceptable and I support it and I know Carmen Corbasson and that is what our City Council decided.
WE WILL ACCEPT A Power Plant, based in the right location, under the right conditions."
But what do those words REALLY mean?  Will "based in the right location, under the right conditions" mean right in  residents backyards if the Mayor thinks that is right?  You bet it does!  She just will not say so - at this point, wait till after the election.  Remember, timing is everything - check it out here.

It is no wonder the Ratepayers think the Mayor is all for a power plant in their back yard.

The question was put directly to the Mayor if she supported a power plant by Roy Willis and the Mayor was not fore coming with the answer as to if she supports a new power plant in Lakeview.

At key quote from Councillor
Corbasson was that she does not support a power plant from 2 years ago and will for the next 2 years BUT her term of office would be 4 years if election again - what does that mean?

The story of this meeting did not end that evening but continued on with how it was reported and the story changed under mysteries circumstances.  Did the Mayor place one of her famous calls and put her old trick of turning the phone into a flamethrower?

You be the judge of what happened between 7:25 am when the article was posted and 16:53 when it was changed and changed greatly in the Mayor's (during an election), favor.  Spot the changes and wonder why they were made.  Spaces are added to try and make the stories line up as best I can.

The printed version had 2 nice pictures of "Mayor McCallion" and "Carmen Corbasson" & the title of this had changed again to "Residents offered little say in power plant plan".

Residents angered by mayor's comments

(Mississauga) - Dozens of south Mississauga residents left a public meeting outraged last night after Mayor Hazel McCallion told them she would support a new power plant on the site of the former Lakeview Generating station.

"If she supports this, she is supporting pollution as far as I'm concerned," said 45-year-old Lakeview resident Joel Alam.

The meeting, hosted by the Lakeview Ratepayers Association, was held to discuss several issues in the area including a new gas-fired power plant that is being considered on the lakefront.

Ontario Power Generation (OPG), Enersource Mississauga and Borealis, which owns 10 per cent of Enersource, are considering construction of a new natural gas-fired power plant on the Lakeview site, which stopped operating a more-pollutant coal-fired plant in April 2005 after 43 years.

Both McCallion and Ward 1 Councillor Carmen Corbasson told the packed room at the Mississauga Seniors' Centre on Cawthra Rd. that, despite opposition from constituents, they should brace themselves for a power plant.

"We can bury our heads in the sand and say 'these plants aren't going to go anywhere around here,'" said Corbasson. "But the government is going to dictate where these plants go."

McCallion indicated that, unlike a current proposal by Eastern Power to build a smaller gas-fired plant that would be located a lot closer to residential neighbourhoods in the area of Dundas St. and Dixie Rd., she would support a gas-fired power plant on the Lakeview site.

"It is zoned for it. We cannot deny it. It's acceptable," she said. "There is need for hydro. There is need for electricity. I believe as Mayor we must accept some of the responsibility because we are a major user of hydro. We will accept power plants in the right location, under the right conditions, (including a) full environmental assessment."

Jim Tovey, president of the ratepayers association, passed around a petition, which was later signed by Corbasson, that the Ontario government carry out a complete environmental assessment of the Lakeview community, including soil, air and water testing, before any consideration is given to putting a new power plant on the site.

"We don't feel they should even consider a power plant here until a complete environmental assessment is done of the whole neighbourhood," said Tovey. "There should also be health studies done of the long-term residents," said Tovey, who adds that local residents believe the incidence of illness and cancer may be higher near the former coal-burning plant.

Tovey said despite claims the new 800-megawatt plant will be a cleaner source of fuel, it would still emit, annually, several pollutants, including 106 tonnes of volatile organic chemicals, 1,693 tonnes of nitrogen oxides "which can cause respiratory problems and skin burns," and 943 tonnes of carbon monoxide, "which causes breathing problems and suffocation," according to the Clear The Air Coalition.

Lakeview resident Lucy Qureshi was among many who disagreed with the location of the OPG/Enersource plant.

"What are we doing? Where is our vision for the waterfront?" she said to a round of applause. "Power plants can be designed to go anywhere. Don't waste (the Lakeview land) on that."

Residents have little choice in power plant plan

(Mississauga) - Several south Mississauga residents left a public meeting frustrated Wednesday night after Mayor Hazel McCallion told them she supported a new power plant on the site of the former Lakeview Generating station.

"If she supports this, she is supporting pollution as far as I'm concerned," said 45-year-old Lakeview resident Joel Alam.

The meeting, hosted by the Lakeview Ratepayers Association, was held to discuss several issues in the area including a new gas-fired power plant considered for the lakefront.

McCallion also indicated that, unlike a current proposal by Eastern Power to build a smaller gas-fired plant that would be located a lot closer to residential neighbourhoods in the area of Dundas St. and Dixie Rd., she would support a gas-fired power plant on the Lakeview site.

"It is zoned for it. We cannot deny it. It's acceptable," she said.

The mayor earlier said "there is need for hydro. There is need for electricity. I believe as Mayor we must accept some of the responsibility because we are a major user of hydro. We will accept power plants in the right location, under the right conditions, (including a) full environmental assessment."

McCallion said the City could try to rezone the land, which is currently owned by OPG, so that it would be prohibited to put a power plant in that location.

But, the Mayor added, the City would be forced to spend millions of taxpayers' dollars on legal fees when OPG appeals the rezoning, so she doesn't intend on pursuing a rezoning application.

"Some things are worth the fight and the money," one resident hollared.

Jim Tovey, president of the ratepayers association, passed around a petition, which was later signed by Corbasson, that the Ontario government carry out a complete environmental assessment of the Lakeview community, including soil, air and water testing, before any consideration is given to putting a new power plant on the site.

McCallion too, supported the petition.
